I don’t know where you are in Calif but some of the best camping can be found along a river or by a lake up by Lake Tahoe Calif. There is a little campground in Markleeville Calif that is first come first served that has about 10 camp spots and it is along the river and it is very nice. (Markleeville is a little town about 35 miles Southeast of Lake Tahoe) It is pretty crowded on holidays, but not too bad other weekends and such. It is just South of town and you turn left and go down to the river. A great website to find camping is on the State of Calif website under Calif Parks. You have to make a reservation for most of those 7 months in advance. What makes that one in Markleeville and some others around Lake Tahoe is they are not on the reservation system. Good luck !!! Camping is the greatest!
Cassini Ranch campground on the Russian river is a great family campground. They even rent canoes for ya there. You can pitch a tent or bring a big RV. There is plenty to do there and it is a nice clean campground. it is near Santa Rosa in northern California.
